Leo Blech (Aachen, 21.04.1871 - Berlin, 25.08.1958): German opera composer and conductor of Jewish origin. Studied piano with Ernst Rudorff and composition with Woldemar Bargiel at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. Later took private lessons with Engelbert Humperdinck.
1893-1896: conductor Stadttheater Aachen
1899-1906: Neues Deutsches Theater, Prague
1906-1937: Königliches Schauspielhaus = later: Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin
1937-1941: in exile in Riga, because of the Nazis. Conducted the Latvian National Opera and Ballet Theatre. Göring arranged for an exit visa to neutral Sweden, fearing Blech's popularity at home and abroad.
1941-1949: Royal Opera, Stockholm
1949-1953: Städtische Oper, Berlin
He composed several operas, a.o. Aglaja (1893); Cherubina (1894); Das war ich (1902); Aschenbroedel (1905); Versiegelt (1908) and Die Strohwitwe (operetta, 1920). He also composed orchestral works, chamber music and songs.
