Marcel Moyse (Saint-Amour, 17.05.1889 - Brattleboro, Vermont, 01.11.1984): French flutist, founder of the modern French flute school. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with the flute virtuosos Philippe Gaubert, Adolphe Hennebains and Paul Taffanel.
1913: tour with Nellie Melba through America in her private train
A great number of pieces were written especially for him, such as the flute concerto by Jacques Ibert from 1934 and the first movement of Joueurs de flûte by Albert Roussel. He was also an inspiring teacher:
1932 - 1940: Conservatoire Paris
1946 - 1948: Conservatoire Geneva
1960 - 1970: Master classes in Switzerland, U.S.A., England, Japan.
Marcel Moyse also wrote many etudes and study methods for the flute, including leading books on tone production and interpretation.
1951: He founded the Marlboro Music School and Festival in the United States, together with Adolf and Hermann Busch and Rudolf Serkin.
Piero Coppola (Milan, 11.10.1888 - Lausanne, 17.03.1971): Italian conductor, pianist and composer. Both his parents were opera singers.
1909: Debut as a conductor with "Manon" in Turin.
1910: Appointed assistant conductor to Tullio Serafin at La Scala, Milan.
1914-1918: Active in Scandinavia
1921: Settles in Paris
1923-1934: Artistic director for HMV France
1939: Settles in Switzerland
1944: Publishes his memoirs: Dix-sept ans de musique à Paris, 1922-1939
1949: Makes his last recording with the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire: Handel's Concerto Grosso, Op. 6 No. 1
Between 1923 and 1934 he was the artistic director of the French branch of the Gramophone Company (HMV): La Voix de Son Maître / Disque Gramophone. Coppola excelled particularly in the French repertoire. He has many record premieres to his name: including La Mer by Debussy (1928), and as far as I know also La damoiselle élue (1934); furthermore Shéhérazade (1928) and Daphnis et Chloé suite 1 (1934) by Ravel, and Prokofiev's 3rd piano concerto, with the composer behind the piano (1932).
He composed 2 operas, a symphony and some short works.
