DM 48.1 – More Mint Clarity
As promised, more news as it comes about the next version of Linux Mint. Usually these version changes are more about small quality of life changes, but here’s what the Mint team is focusing on for the new version:

· Better flatpak support
· Better libAdwaita support through xdg-desktop-portal
· Cinnamon 5.8
o Multi-threaded thumbnail loading to help Nemo feel more responsive
· A handful of JavaScript interpreters
· Wayland support
· Latest version of xfce
· More secure version of Warpinator
· A whole bunch more

I will continue to share info as it comes out, even though I do not personally use Mint anymore. I do have a soft spot for the project, as I used it for a handful of years, and it is still probably among the most accessible distros out there.

DM 48.2 – Redcore Linux 2301

Remember Redcore Linux? It is a Gentoo fork. What’s Gentoo Linux? A rolling release distro that has its own package manager, and tends to be a favorite of old school, hardcore greybeard *nix aficionados who love to build things from scratch. Gentoo is not something that I have tried, but it can be very light, and also tends to miss many packages that are available for either Debian/*buntu or Arch, as it is a very small distro. Nonetheless it is important, even if it is small. Redcore is a fork, so what makes it different? It is meant to be more accessible and to have more up to date packages than mainstream Gentoo, these things together make it a bit more casual user friendly:

· KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS
o Frameworks 5.103
o Qt Libs 5.15.8
o KDE Gear 22.12.2
· LXQt 1.2
o PCmanFM
o Panel-a
o QTerminal improvements
· Mesa 23
· X11 to 21.1.7
· Wayland to 22.1.8

DM 48.3 – IPFire 2.27 Core
What is IPFire, you ask? Let me tell you, this is a hardened, embedded Linux distro meant for firewalls and routers and other network equipment. It is built from scratch by the team, and has two layers of firewall security built in, yes, the firewall has a firewall. On top of the firewalls, it has its own intrusion prevention system which monitors traffic, detects exploits and data leaks, then blocks the attacker from access. It also makes it a breeze to set up a VPN so that you can access remote files and resources easily and securely. All this with a raft of add-ons which extend the capabilities of your equipment running IPFire.

What’s new in this update, then?
· Linux 61 LTS series
· QMI support so that it can operate some Qualcomm LTE and 5G modems
· Improvements for OpenVPN
· Security improvements
o Landlock support (came with Linux 61, but reduces ambient rights for a set of processes)
o protection against direct memory access via malicious PCI devices on AArch64 (ARM64) systems
o protection against cold boot attacks by allowing the firmware to wipe all memory when rebooting
· Lots of other updates, but I don’t want to get too caught up in the nitty gritty here, so I’m not gonna cover them.
