The bird magpie or shamas (from shama, Bengali and Hindi for C. malabaricus) is a medium-sized insectivorous bird (some also eat berries and other fruit) in the genus Copsychus. This type of bird is found in parks and forest areas in Africa and Asia.
The genus Copsychus was introduced by the German naturalist Johann Georg Wagler in 1827. One species was later designated the village magpie. The name Copsychus is taken from the Ancient Greek kopsukhos or kopsikhos which means "black bird".
