Franz-Joseph Hirt (Lucerne, 07.02.1899 - Bern, 20.05.1985), Swiss pianist, studied with his mother, Josephine Hirt-Kopp, who was a pupil of Clara Schumann. He continued his studies in Basel with H. Huber and E. Levy, then with Egon Petri and Alfred Cortot. Followed the Felix Weingartner conducting course.
In 1919, he became a teacher at the Conservatory in Bern, where he led a master class from 1930. Amongst others, he taught there the Swiss composer-pianist Jean Perrin (1920-1989).
He also made many tours, a.o. with Maurice Ravel, Hans Pfitzner, Arthur Honegger and Paul Hindemith.
Hirt gave the first performance in Europe of Hindemith's piano concerto (1948).
Apart from the classical repertoire, he played a lot of modern French music: Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, Messiaen. For this reason he was appointed Officier de l'Académie (1927), and Officier de la Légion d'honneur (1957).
He was appointed by Alfred Cortot as Professeur délégué de l'Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris.
He was a jury member of the international competitions in Scheveningen, Paris and Geneva.
He wrote books: "Die Entwicklung der besaiteten Tasteninstrumenten" (1948) and "Meisterwerke des Klavierbaus" (1955).
Alphonse Brun (Frankfurt am Main, 25.10.1888 - Bern, 27.03.1963), Swiss violinist, studied with Adolf Busch and Carl Flesch. He became leader of the Musikgesellschaft Bern in 1912 and in 1925 director of the music school in Bern.
Lorenz Lehr (1889-1959) was solo cellist of the Musikgesellschaft Bern from 1914-1935 and a member of the Bern String Quartet.
