The train crash was caused by human error

After visiting the scene of the head-on accident between a passenger train and a freight train on Tuesday night, PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis made a statement.

Manslaughter charges have been brought against the local stationmaster. The Greek minister of transportation has resigned.

Teams of rescuers are still looking for survivors.

On Tuesday, soon before midnight, the accident took place. A freight train and a passenger train collided as they exited from a tunnel after leaving the town of Larissa, each carrying about 350 passengers.

Why the two services were operating on the same track is still a mystery.

The stationmaster, who is in charge of signaling, has blamed the disaster on a potential technical issue but denies any misconduct.
