Cables were burning everywhere, flames were all around us. We thought it was our end,” says a young man who survived a train crash in central Greece. The death toll rose to 36 people.
Shortly before midnight, a passenger train from Athens to Thessaloniki carrying more than 350 people collided with a freight train. The first three carriages of the passenger train were completely destroyed. There was a fire. More than 150 firefighters participated in the firefighting operation.
More than 80 people were taken to hospitals, mainly in Larisa; 20 people are seriously injured. Fire officials say the death toll could be higher.
