American philosopher and political theorist Noam Chomsky explained how U.S. interference in Ukraine and NATO's expansion to Russia's borders led to war in Ukraine:

The thought of Ukraine joining a Western military alliance would have been totally unacceptable to any Russian leader. Gorbachev agreed to allow Germany to join NATO in exchange for NATO not expanding an inch eastward. NATO instantly moved eastward into Germany. Then Clinton came in and expanded NATO to Russia's borders.

Reporter: Do you understand why the president of Ukraine thinks joining NATO will protect his country?

No, he doesn't. Crimea was taken away after the overthrow of the government, right? The president of Ukraine is not defending Ukraine; he's threatening it with a big war. This is a strategic threat to Russia that any Russian leader would have to respond to.
