Numbers 11-13 | The Holy Spirit and Some Grumblings

In Numbers chapter 11, the Israelites are in the wilderness, and they begin to complain about their lack of food. Moses is overwhelmed by the people's complaining and asks God to take his life. God responds by giving the people an abundance of quail to eat, but he also sends a plague to punish them for their lack of faith.

In the midst of this situation, God tells Moses to gather seventy of the elders of Israel and bring them to the tent of meeting. There, God takes some of the Spirit that is on Moses and puts it on the seventy elders, and they begin to prophesy. Two of the elders, Eldad and Medad, continue prophesying even after they have left the tent of meeting. Joshua, Moses' assistant, is concerned about this and asks Moses to stop them, but Moses replies, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord's people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!" (Numbers 11:29).

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon people temporarily to accomplish specific tasks, such as prophesying. It was not yet given as a permanent indwelling presence in the lives of believers, as it is in the New Testament.

In Numbers chapter 12, Aaron and Miriam, Moses' brother and sister, criticize him for marrying a Cushite woman. They also question whether God only speaks through Moses and suggest that they should have a share in leadership. God responds by calling them to the tent of meeting and rebuking them for their jealousy and rebellion. He also strikes Miriam with leprosy, which causes her to be excluded from the camp for seven days.

In Numbers chapter 13, Moses sends twelve spies, one from each tribe, to explore the land of Canaan, which God has promised to give to the Israelites. The spies spend forty days in the land and return with a report that the land is indeed rich and fertile, but also that the people who live there are strong and their cities are fortified. Ten of the spies are afraid and say that they cannot conquer the land, but Joshua and Caleb believe that God will give them victory.

This incident shows the importance of faith and trust in God's promises, even when circumstances seem daunting. It also foreshadows the Israelites' later disobedience and lack of faith, which will result in their wandering in the wilderness for forty years
