Natural Expansion Of The Off Grid Homestead

Monday morning there was a surprise out in the chicken coop. I worked at the lumber yard again, getting free lumber for construction.

My tiny little Bantam hen was laying eggs when I was in Florida a little over a month ago. When I got back, my fridge blew out and I left the eggs in the chicken coop. They sat there about two weeks untouched by anything.

Later my white hen who only laid one single egg herself ever sat on the eggs and stayed there. I waited about 4 weeks to see what would happen. I figured they were rotten by now. Eggs normally hatch after 3 weeks but I waited.

Monday morning I found a cute little baby chick alive and sadly 4 dead ones. They had hatched in the night and the new mother accidentally smothered them. I asked a chicken breeding friend of mine what to do and was told to let her learn. She is a new mother.

I worked about 3.5 hours in the lumber yard cutting boards and tossing most of them into a big container. They were mostly rotten and insect filled. It was harsh working and I got sick again due to the heat though. It was 90 degrees with 50% humidity. At the lumber yard there is no shade, no wind and the sun beats right down. I must have moved quite a few thousand pounds of wood again. I filled the container and then left for the day.

When I got back to the off grid homestead I found that I now had three live little chicks. I put some water and food in the chicken coop for my new mother.

Due to the extreme heat and my not feeling well, I spent the rest of the afternoon studying online about tiny house construction, especially flooring and vapor barriers.

A package arrive from Allan Brown containing 12 work shirts and a package of trailer jack protective plates. Thank you Allan.
