You Have Never Talked to a Mere Mortal
Have you ever considered that we are walking among immortal beings everyday? I'm not talking about angels. I'm talking about our family members, friends, co-workers, the cashier at the grocery store, the person we walk by on the street and even the disgruntled customer in line in front of us.
C.S. Lewis wrote: “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit.”
Isn’t it amazing to realize that every human being was created to be an immortal being? C.S. Lewis also wrote, “remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship”.
God’s intention was never to create us to be temporary, short-term beings. His desire has always been to create mankind to be His eternal family.
Ephesians 1:4-5 tells us: “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love, he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.”
Apostle Paul also tells us that we have been adopted into God’s family as we read in Romans 8:15-17:
“the Spirit you received, brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him, we cry, “ Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.”
Even those who are currently not in Christ, are intended to become part of his family through repentance and the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Joel 2:28, we read: “I will pour out my Spirit on ALL people.”... “And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance.” God doesn't want anyone to perish but to come to eternal life as we read in II Peter 3:9. He is the God of patience and second chances.
In closing, I want to share a great quote I heard by Messianic Rabbi Jason Sobel, a believer in Jesus. He said, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spirit beings having a physical experience.”
So let us live as a spiritual being having a physical experience and regard each other in the same way. In Christ, we are not mere mortals and none of mankind is meant to be a mere mortal. We are all created to be immortal and dwell with God for eternity.
