Working On Construction Of My Tiny House Floor
Wednesday I worked on the tiny house floor some more. I put some lag bolts in between the two floor halves and got some more of the tongue and groove plywood sheets in place.
In the morning I was sitting in my truck getting ready to head off to the lumber yard to get the vinyl siding which I am picking up for free. I was looking at the weather report and this day was supposed to be a rare sunny day. I shut off the truck and decided to stay at the off grid homestead today and work on the tiny house instead.
If you remember I have sealed off the bottom of the tiny house with aluminum flashing and caulk. There is no way any water is getting in or out of the floor. For that reason I cannot work in the rain on my tiny home. The floor would fill up with water quickly and make a mess of things.
The first thing I did was to drill 8 holes in the two beams where the floor halves come together and screw in lag bolts to help secure the halves more solidly. Now they are screwed, glued and bolted together.
The rest of the day I worked on getting the floor boards in place. I only had two boards fastened down so far. It took me all day to get four more boards in place. This is because I am searching through old lumber to find pieces that are not rotted or damaged by insects. I am using pieces of the old wood to secure the floor down better under the joints.
When placing a floor board down I first put a bead of liquid nails all along the floor joints where the board will sit. Then I position the tongue and groove board into place and try to get the joints together.
With a warped board this is a real challenge out here along. I found that using some scrap wood on top of the board and then some heavy cement blocks to weight it down, I am able to hammer the tongue and groove joints together nicely. The scrap wood protects the floor boards from scratches.
The floor is feeling very good and solid. There is no flex and there are no squeaks in the floor. I think this is going to be very good. I am using 3/4 inch tongue and groove plywood sub flooring. I hand chose the best looking boards because I am going to sand and shellac the boards and use them as my actual floor.
