Digging For "Buried Treasure" And Preparing For Maple Syrup Season

I spent the day Monday digging out from the latest snow storm again. But I also started to dig out some more lost and buried wood out in the side yard because my supplies are running low up front.

There is a whole lot of wood buried under snow back there. It was like digging for buried treasure looking for lost and buried fire wood.

This job has three purposes though. Another purpose of the work today was to start clearing out a place to process maple syrup this season. Maple syrup season should start around the 1st of March this year, I am guessing. That is if this deep freeze ever loses its grip on us here.

So I am clearing out this space to make room to build a sugar shack out of pallet wood. And I plan to build a maple syrup boiling stove out of cement blocks and bricks soon.

I am also stacking up snow in huge piles that I will later use as an outdoor refrigerator for my raw maple sap overnight during the maple harvesting season.

The idea is to have huge piles of snow that will not be melted away when the weather warms up. This will give me a cold place to store the buckets of raw unprocessed maple sap each night.

This year I hope to get into maple syrup harvesting on a little bit larger scale and hopefully sell some during the summer at the markets along with eggs and garden produce.
