Craigslist Haul For The Off Grid Homestead And Tiny House Construction
I spent the first half the day running the roads on a craigslist haul for the off grid homestead. The second part of the day was spent working with reclaimed barn wood for my tiny home construction.
I drove my truck out to get some fiberglass pressurized water tanks. These tanks are used for water pressure in homes. When the air pressure bladder fails in the tanks, they are replaced and taken to the warehouse. The warehouse was giving them away for free.
I saw the potential for rain water collection and went right out to get them. I got a total of six large 40 gallon water tanks and another ten smaller 20 gallon tanks for a total of 440 gallons of water capacity for my off grid homestead.
Two of the 20 gallon tanks will go upstairs in my tiny house on wheels, in the loft. These water tanks will provide my tiny home with a gravity fed water supply. This is exactly what I needed for my tiny house on wheels.
The rest of the tanks will be used outside for rain water collection. This gives me a total capacity of 715 gallons of rain water for the off grid homestead.
In spring I will set up an insulated shed for my water storage tanks, battery banks and food supply. I plan to heat it by pumping heat from the tiny house into the storage shed. This should keep my water supply and battery bank from freezing in the dead of winter. In summer it will do the opposite and keep the water and batteries cooler during the hot days.
Food storage will go in the back of the shed to keep it at a relatively stable temperature all year round.
In the afternoon I sorted out some of my old barn wood to find some pieces that I can use in building my tiny house.
I took some of my reclaimed lumber and cut out the perfect pieces for the sides of my coat rack by the tiny house door. These fit just right and make the coat rack/shelf look more complete and finished.
I use barn siding for the sides and even left the old barn paint on them. This adds to the rustic look and shows that this wood is from an old barn. I like it.
