Trucker Buck From YouTube Joins The Off Grid Project For The Day

My YouTube friend Trucker Buck came over for a couple days to help out at The Off Grid Project. And I helped him in exchange with his YouTube channel.

We started out collecting maple sap and bringing it over to my homemade maple syrup evaporator. This was a full time job in itself keeping the fire going.

I got my garden tractor running so I could haul fire wood all day to feed the fire with. I used up all the junk pallet wood I had out in a pile by the old workshop camper.

I actually burnt through all of that and most of a pile of brush and branches I had stacked up for this purpose. This was a pile of branches and small trees up to 3 or 4 inches round.

It takes a lot of fire wood to boil maple syrup down.

We also worked on the chicken range for a while. I needed to repair a whole lot of the fence that was demolished in the snow and winds of winter.

Also all of my hawk lines were down and destroyed. The hawks have been attacking my chickens about every second day now. I needed to get the hawk lines up urgently before they got one of my birds. So far I have been able to chase them off each time they attack. But I cannot run on luck for very long.

Trucker Buck and I put up new boards which extend the chicken fence posts above my head. Then we ran some twine across the poles in a criss crossing manner.

This keeps the hawks from flying into the chicken area. A hawk will generally not fly into an area that it cannot easily and quickly escape from.

So a crossed pattern of string, fishing line or twine can save your chickens from death from above.

I forgot to record or mention that I also fixed up the electric fence and got it working again. Winter was harsh on that too by stretching the wires and making a mess of things. Debris had been blown up against the wire, shorting it in many places. In other places the wire was just plain stretched out and touching the ground.

Trucker Buck got to sample some real fresh maple water for the first time in his life. It was running sweat right not too. It was so nice and refreshing to drink. Maple water or maple sap is full of nutrients and very good for you.

After boiling off the maple sap for a while he got another first in his life. He got to try some fresh homemade maple syrup. It was still hot and steaming when he tried it. The maple syrup tasted so good.
