Putting Free Homemade Pallet Wood Shake Siding On My Tiny House

I am finally putting the siding on my tiny house on wheels. I am using free pallet wood and making my own shake style siding. But to keep the weight down and keep the tiny home mobile, I am using tar paper under each row of pallet wood shake siding.

The tar paper will make the rain run off and out. If any rain ever gets through between the gaps in a row of pallet wood siding then it will hit the tar paper and run out on top of the row of shingles below. The rain will not be able to run under or behind a row of pallet wood shingles and this should prolong the life of the entire tiny house.

I will use an oil based spray on coating when I have the siding finished. This will protect and preserve the wood and hopefully keep bugs out from under the pallet wood shingle siding.

I am cutting pallets as I go so this is a bit time consuming. I will cut up a bunch of pieces at a time and then install them.

I found that to keep the individual pallet wood shingles straight I had to use a level to keep them plumb. I first double checked the level of the tiny house to be sure it was not off after the long cold winter.

After putting up a row of my homemade pallet wood shake siding I put on a 12 inch wide strip of tar paper. This overlaps over the top edge of the row under it. This gives the rain no chance to get behind the wood.

The tar paper extends and overlaps just about double. This is working just like ceder shake siding would if you used all the required layers.

But using 1/4 inch thick pallet wood my house would have an added 9,000 pounds if I did it the way you install cedar shake siding.

So the tar paper allows me to keep the tiny house light but still use free pallet wood siding.

This video shows only half of the day's work. I am also busy running around caring for my homestead animals in my off grid property. That video will be next, followed by the rest of the day of work on the tiny house siding.
