Continued Progress On The Tick Barrier For The Homestead
I am getting more excited as I get the fencing installed further into the woods. I will have about 150 feet of protective fence on both sides of my tiny house on wheels. This will allow the chickens to run free through the entire range and eat ticks.
Chickens pretty much eat anything that moves which they can catch and eat. This includes ticks. Ticks are naturally drawn to the movement of the chickens. Chickens eat the ticks. If one does not see a tick on a chicken then another will eat it right off before the tick has a chance to bite. Chickens run in groups so the ticks do not have a chance of not being seen.
Chickens also eat other insects such as carpenter ants, cockroaches, spiders and more. All the nasty creepy crawlies running through the woods will be cleared out. My tiny house and RV will not have anymore attacks from insects pretty soon.
I will allow the chickens to free range in about 2.5 acres of land in relative safety.
Outside the chicken wire I will have 3 to 4 strands of electric fence wire to keep predators out. Inside I will have another one or two strands to keep my animals in and to keep predators from climbing down the trees into my protected area.
I am just about half way done with installing the chicken wire now. This is a very exciting moment for the off grid homestead. Many of my friends will not visit this year due to the ticks. They are very bad this year.
When I have the chicken wire finished I can let the chickens run free during the day and lock them up at night inside their protected pen. When I get the electric fence finished then the chickens will be allowed to sleep anywhere they please within the protected range.
This is a huge moment for the off grid homestead. I am so happy.
