Spring Cleaning & Back To Eden Style Gardening Work

My garden had grown wild since I broke my rib and could not till this year. So I decided to go with the Back to Eden style garden this year. It is my only choice to have a garden this year since it requires less stress on my body to shovel leaves.

I asked Chris to come over with the riding lawn mower and mow my garden flat. I used the weed eater to trim around places where he could not reach with the lawn mower.

After we had cut down the garden we put some old tarps down over the open grass where I was not yet ready to plan. We covered the tarps with boards to hold them down. The tarps will kill off grass and weeds while I work in other areas of the garden. The rotting vegetation will return nutrients back into the soil which can later be used by my garden vegetables.

Next I plan to cover the entire garden with rotting leaves about 4 inches thick. This provides a moisture barrier, weed barrier and ground cover. As the leaves decay they will provide nutrients for my growing garden vegetables.

I grabbed a snow shovel and a wheel barrow and cleaned out the leaf piles around the side and back of the tiny house on wheels. There was a thick cover of leaves all around the house from the fall. These are attracting insects and rodents. Mice love to live under the leaf cover and actually make their tunnels underneath.

Removing the leaves takes away that cover and protects my home from these pests a bit more.

This is a dual purpose job because I then dumped the leaves on the garden rows to keep the cardboard weed barrier down and help provide more nutrients to the soil as the weeds underneath rot.
