Homestead Work & Gray Water Recirculation System
Melanie and I have been quite busy at the off grid homestead these days. We are so busy running around that we do not grab the camera very much but we are getting a lot accomplished out here.
The day started out with me putting a spring on the screen door of the off grid tiny house porch. This will prevent the screen door from being ripped off its hinges by the strong wind we get out here.
I had a load of pallet wood on the back of the truck that I had to remove in order to go get some drinking water for Melanie and I.
We are not drinking the rain water at all. Even if we filtered it, the water tanks give off an unpleasant plastic taste that is most likely not healthy for us.
We get out water from a neighbor who has a well which is kept full by clean, pure mountain water.
The pallet wood comes from the local small engine shop in town. I have built the entire off grid tiny house kitchen out of pallet wood. The kitchen counter framing was built using this wood. The OSB on the walls is from there. The kitchen cabinets are all from that wood. This is quite nice and clean wood for building the tiny house on wheels.
We take 6 gallon water tanks to the neighbor and fill them up. Each tank lasts us about three days here at the homestead. This is just for drinking.
We use rain water for all our other water needs on the homestead.
In the afternoon I worked on our gray water recirculation system. We have kept all our gray water in buckets and containers up to this time. The kitchen sink drains out into a bucket. This we keep for later filtration and reuse on the off grid homestead.
I have taken a 275 gallon water tank and put it on a pallet which is on cement blocks. This will hold our filtered gray water.
I have made a water filter using a flower pot, some gravel, charcoal and sand. It is a standard three layer water filter.
This is a slow filter and you could essentially use the water back in the tiny house as normal. The water coming out is quite clean.
But we will use this water for plants and gardening.
Nothing gets wasted at the off grid homestead
