Building Rustic Barn Wood Book Shelves In My Tiny House

I spent the first half of the day sorting through my piles of old barn wood. Picking out the good lumber from fire wood. Then I built a beautiful rustic set of book shelves in my tiny house on wheels using the reclaimed lumber.

I sorted about half of a semi truck load of barn wood in the morning. I am putting the good long boards aside to build my insulated battery room behind the tiny house on wheels.

I also sorted out some boards to be used for shelving inside my tiny home.

And anything broken or too badly damaged to be of use goes into a pile to be later cut up and carted over to the fire wood pile. The old barn wood will help heat my tiny house on wheels this winter.

I am now considering making a pallet fire wood shed and cover it with tarps. This will allow me to put logs on one side and barn wood on the other. The barn wood burns hot and fast so it is best for starting a fire or heating up the tiny house as needed. The logs are perfect for over night burning.

I spent a considerable amount of time cutting boards for my tiny home shelving. The problem is the new blade I bought for my Ryobi cordless circular saw binds all the time and makes for hard cutting through this old barn wood.

I was overheating batteries with a single cut each time. I had to swap out three batteries in order to make a total of 4 cuts through an old oak plank.

But eventually I got my boards cut. I have a 12 inch wide lower shelf. Then a 9 inch center shelf. And a 6 inch wide upper shelf.

The support for the lower shelf is 16 inches high and the other two are a foot high.

I fired up the old Harbor Freight 800 watt generator and got out my belt sander. I then roughly sanded all the boards on all sides. This cleaned them up and gave me a rustic look at the same time. I am keeping the old nail holes and darkened spots in the wood. This ads character and gives the look that so many people pay good money for these days.

Upstairs in my tiny house on wheels I assembled the shelving parts on the loft catwalk. The shelves are three tiered and 6 feet long.

I put some book on right away to see how it looked. I am very satisfied with it.

The tiny house on wheels is now starting to look like a real home.
