Whats Been Happening The Last Few Days

Sorry, this took ALL day to upload. An overview of what has been going on since Melanie and I got home to NY. Why Melanie has not been seen on video. What is up with the maple syrup season. And why you saw a ring on my finger.

Melanie and I got home to New York last week and she is now settling into life in a new country. Obviously moving to a new country is a bit of a shock so she needs time to adjust to her new life.

Many of you have seen a ring on my finger earlier and there are many questions floating around about it. We had our civil wedding already in Michigan and we wore our rings for a few days. We are still waiting for the church wedding though to make it official. This is still planned for the 26th of March.

The maple syrup season did not go as well as I had hoped but that was out of my hands. The weather was unusually warm this year and the trees are already budding a month early.

The maple syrup season generally starts on the last week of Feb through the first week of April. This year the sap was flowing intermittently already in the first week of Feb. But this year we either had cold days and cold nights or warm days and warm nights.

The sap flows best when there are warm days and cold nights (below freezing). At my place we had about a week and a half of sap flow.

I had ordered more tubing to be able to tap a whole lot more trees this year but it did not arrive for a week and a half. This was then after the sap stopped flowing.

I emptied my sap containers days ago and they are not filling up at all. It seems like the season is over now.

But the good news is that now I have a very good sugar shack and maple sap evaporator. I have a great start for next year. When the sap starts to flow next year I will be ready with all the equipment necessary for a great harvest.

I will continue to work on the sugar shack and improve it for next year. It will also serve as a smoke house for the rest of the year for preserving meats.

I will reinforce the sugar shack better and put in shelving and storage for my maple syrup equipment.
