Melanie and I made a chicken coop out of an old rabbit hutch that I had purchased a while back. This is the perfect Bantam chicken coop. Read the full blog post here: http://www.thedoityourselfworld.com/blog/?p=1970

I bought this old rabbit hutch at a garage sale last fall for just this purpose. It did not have a roof on it but the rest of the hutch was intact. I had a vision for a chicken coop for my Bantam chickens.

Now the time has come to build my chicken coop because I am moving the birds out of the meadow and into the side yard. This will help clear up the meadow and make it pretty.

Melanie helped me fit an old door as a roof. It works nicely and will provide shelter and shade. The overhang on both sides also provides some nice shade for the birds in summer.

Next I fitted a piece of wood for the side wall. I plan to close off one half of the hutch as a shelter for the birds to sleep at night.

The next piece closed off another wall of the new chicken coop.

A piece of plywood makes a good solid floor to keep the bedding inside the chicken coop.

I made a center divider using some old OSB scraps and cut a doorway into it for the birds to enter into their new home.

A piece of 2x4 rounded off on top makes a nice perch for the birds to roost at night.

Last I added a board as a divider for the nesting box and then added some bedding material for my chickens.

Melanie and I caught the Bantam chickens and put them into their new home.

Later I plan to build a rugged protected area for the chickens to walk around outside and live safely.

The total cost for this project was about $15 or less. I dont remember if I got a deal when I bought this or not but the price sticker says 15. I used scrap lumber that I get for free to build the rest of the chicken coop.

The door makes a perfect ramp for the birds to walk up and down by day when I have the chicken coop open.
