Solar Heating Panels Free For The Taking ~ House Demolition

I got a phone call a couple weeks ago about a house in Michigan that was being demolished. Anything inside or out was free for the taking except for the structure itself.

I was given a photo of the panels a while ago and thought they were solar water heating panels based on the photo. No matter what, I was going to get those panels.

I was planning a trip home to visit my parents in Michigan and get the panels while there. Finally Melanie and I packed up the truck and headed to our parents place.

We went to the cabin and Mackinaw city first for some fun in the sun. We also did some videos for my tactical channel here:

I had taken a look at the panels on the roof the evening before and opened up the side of one of the panels to see what type of tools we would need for the job. I still thought these were water solar panels at this time. There was nothing to make me think otherwise.

At the angle they were on the roof, I could not get a good look at the front of the panels to see any details.

The next morning we took some tools and extension cords and got to work.

First we wanted to get a look into the attic to see what we had to work with. There was no access from inside the house. Since the place was going to be demolished soon, we were allowed to tear a hole in the wall.

We were going to cut the water pipe out of the way but the cut off wheel was too short. So we worked around the pipe and ripped the paneling and insulation out of the way.

This allowed us to see what was under the solar panels. I found it odd that one pipe went straight down while the other went through a wall far away but I was still not aware that these were solar heating panels.

The first panel came apart quite easily. We removed the screws that held the A frame to the solar panel. Then we ripped away the framing and the insulated box that kept the heat isolated from the cold winter days.

When we pulled the solar panel away from the framing we were surprised to find that these were solar heating panels and not solar water panels. And boy were they pumping out the heat in the full summer sun!!!

I was shocked to find heating panels but not dismayed. I immediately had a thought that one could heat the future greenhouse and another can heat the off grid solar battery and water shed.

We set this solar panel off to the side of the roof, out of the way.

Stay tuned for part two of the video......
