Started The Garden @ The Off Grid Homestead

After getting the garden tiller running, I immediately went to work in the garden tilling the ground for this year's planting.

I was hoping to eventually get a back to eden gardening method mixed with a modified square foot garden method. The back to eden method is a no till method of gardening where you always build up with compost and mulch. Each year you add more compost and mulch. You plant directly into this mixture. The mulch retains moisture and it also allows you to remove weeds and food easily.

The square foot gardening method uses 4 foot square garden blocks. This idea eliminates wasted space with rows of food alternating with rows of compacted walk ways. The idea is that you can reach into the center of a 4 foot square garden block from any side. You can also plant more condensed in the square foot method and produce more food for your efforts.

I have 4 foot wide rows in the garden which allow me to reach into the center from both isles on the sides. This eliminates even more wasted space with the aisles in between the 4 foot square blocks.

I plan to have 4 foot wide rows of vegetables with aisles in between. Then I hope to build up layers of compost and mulch through the years on top of the garden. This will eliminate weeds and reduce the need for watering.

This old tiller is a powerful beast. I love it very much! I never liked rear tine tillers in the past because they cannot be used in smaller spaces like the corner of a garden. With a front tine tiller you can get right up against the fence with ease. With a rear tine tiller you are blocked by the engine out in front. But this machine is so powerful and makes gardening so much easier that I will not go back to front tine tillers again.

There are still a lot of rocks in the garden and the going is slow and rough. I have to stop a lot and pull out the rocks from the soil as I work.

Later Melanie joined me in removing the rocks from the garden as I worked the soil.

It took me two days to get about a fifth of the garden cleared of debris and tilled. It is very slow going but we will get it done.

I hope to get some cold weather vegetables in the garden soon.

I am spreading leaves on top of the areas that I have tilled to keep weeds out. Last year I planted tomatoes and spread leaves in between the plants. This totally eliminated the weeds in between.

I will be using this method again this year and forever on.

There are many rumors and questions about why I deleted the camping videos from the weekend. This guy doc keeps trying to get me falsely arrested for arson. There was a forest fire about a mile from my home on that very weekend. But we were over an hour away in a different location, outside Kingston NY. Doc is ranting that this is the reason I removed the videos. He swears I started the fires and is using my camping videos as evidence against me. He has called the authorities and stirred up others to do so in hopes that I may be arrested.

But we were nowhere near this area on that weekend and I have proof due to signing into the registry at the campgrounds where we stayed.

The reason that I removed those videos is that about 70% of the comments were upset with me for taking Melanie out camping. People are acting like she is some child that needs to be protected from me. They are angry with me for abusing the poor child and torturing her. Doc is actually using these videos as evidence to that effect as well and has turned us into the INS and other agencies in hopes that they will take Melanie away from me.

Melanie is an adult and she makes her own decisions. She was actually excited about going out camping on this weekend. We had a great time out there and Melanie actually made her own videos while we were out.

But now, sadly with all the negativity, Melanie is very hurt. She feels like people are treating her like a child. She is my wife. She is an adult. Not a child who needs protecting from me. She has her own mind. She makes up her own mind and decides what she wants to do or not. Believe me, I know.

So Melanie may not be making videos anymore. She is considering if she wants to go on or not now.
