Mega Homestead Gardening Day & Eating Our Harvest

It has been scorching hot recently but on this day we got a bit of a break. It was about ten degrees cooler so we worked in the garden all day.

Melanie was working on removing all the weeds in the garden rows while I was mulching the garden to stop future weed growth.

I got a truck load of mulch in the morning hours when it was still cool out and then took a break to rehydrate before heading out again to spread the mulch along the garden row. I managed to get one row mulched with a truck load.

We are using the aged mulch I got about a year and a half ago. This is good mulch for the garden because it is leaching out nutrients into the soil.

It also covers the soil and retains moisture. The mulch stops future weed growth as well. So there are multiple benefits from covering the garden in mulch.

We are also mulching in between the plants in the actual rows to retain moisture and prevent weed growth.

Chris is working long hours out by the animals. He keeps the goat and chicken areas clean each day. Checks and cleans their water dishes. And works on clearing out trees and brush so that we can expand the chicken range soon.

Our off grid solar power situation is looking better these days with the lower power interter. With the reduced power drain from the little Aims power inverter we hit absorption mode by mid day each day. We often hit float mode in the afternoon on a sunny day now as well.

I have not turned off the power inverter since we got it.

We have been harvesting food from our own garden these days and it really feels good. Melanie is especially excited about eating the food that we have grown ourselves.

We have tomatoes every day now as needed. We have our own bell peppers, sweet peppers, hot peppers and all sorts of peppers. We have some root vegetables and a lot of salad greens.

Our green beans and peas are ready for eating too now. And the summer squash is going to be ready to eat in two days.
