Beautiful Barn Wood Post & Working On Hand Rail

I have been trying to find a true 4x4 post for my hand rail. I even tried to make one out of scrap lumber. But finally I got the idea to look in the barn wood pile and found a beautiful post for my tiny house loft hand rail.

It was splintered on both ends and very short but all I needed was 22 inches for the corner post.

I wanted a decorative post on the corner where the two sections of hand rail meet.

The lumber yard has no untreated true 4x4 lumber. They are all 3.5 x 3.5 inches.

I worked on the wood shop for a long time trying to make something using smaller scraps of wood but it was not going to look very good if I did.

Eventually I had the idea to check the barn wood pile. I did not expect to find a 4x4 because all the wood out there is huge. It was a barn after all and the beams are 8 to 12 inches or more.

But I found this splintered piece of a 4x4 with just enough undamaged wood for my project.

I had to make four cuts with the circular saw and then use the reciprocating saw to finish the cut because it was so large but it worked out well.

I took the 22 inch piece of reclaimed 4x4 lumber into the tiny house on wheels and tried it out for size. It looked amazing. I am very pleased with this old barn wood piece.

I started working on the larger hand rail next. I cut all the spindles out of recycled pallet wood from the local small engine shop. I get the shipping crates from them for free. They put out the wood on a first come, first served basis and I always grab what I can find to work on my tiny home.

I set up this piece just like I did with the shorter one and it went together smoothly.

I am very pleased with the looks of it. I looks just like a real professional hand rail in a house now.
