Uprighting The Fallen Truck Camper
Chris and I worked for about two hours and got the fallen truck camper back on its floor. It was quite a job but in the end we got it done. We had a friend who was supposed to help as well but he never showed up.
I had spent quite a bit of time analyzing the truck camper and thinking about how to get it back on its floor again without damaging anything inside.
Melanie had just put all our wedding gifts and kitchen ware out there due to a water leak under the kitchen sink. We blew out a water drain pipe and Melanie emptied the area under the counter.
All our glass ware, bakeware, canning jars, dishes and more were out in the truck camper.
I wanted to settle it over on its floor without jarring anything inside any more than they already had been.
I used a come along attached to a tree and the camper jack to put pressure on the one side to prevent the camper from tipping over on its side. It was badly leaning on its side and wanted to tip that way.
We used the engine hoist to put pressure on the lower corner of the truck camper so that I could remove a bolt from the jack that was jammed under the camper and pull the jack out using a rope.
Then I secured the jack out of the way and we let the camper down on some tires to keep it from tipping over.
After releasing the engine hoist and putting pressure on the come along, we were able to move the engine hoist to the other side.
This time we fully extended the engine hoist and used a chain connected to the jack to keep the camper from falling down fast and hard on its floor.
Cranking the come along a few cranks at a time and then releasing the engine hoist slightly, brought the camper down bit by bit.
This took us some time but eventually we got it. I recorded the whole thing just in case so that you can watch it all unfold.
We had to readjust the engine hoist at one time and the tires came in handy again. But we got the camper down on the ground.
The amount of stuff in the cab over bed area causes the camper to still want to tip over on its front end. We have to move everything down to the floor area and into the storage cabinets to stabilize the truck camper.
You should never store gear up in the cab over bed area. It was designed to have all its weight in the bottom and center to prevent tipping over. I am saying this for anyone else out there in order to maybe help out and prevent an accident.
I do not blame Melanie for this and I am not angry contrary to what so many people are saying in the comments. I am very sad and blame myself for not paying attention to what she was doing. She had no idea. I know better.
