President Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine ahead of this week's first anniversary of Russia's invasion and announced another $500 million in military aid to Ukraine and more sanctions on Russia. The visit underlines what Biden called his "unwavering support" for Ukrainian independence at a time when growing numbers of people in the United States and other countries are pushing for a negotiated end to the fighting. "For an American president to make a trip like this is enormously symbolic," says Matt Duss, visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former Bernie Sanders adviser.
