vision of a broken past
The old Bunker Hill neighborhood above downtown Los Angeles used to have the "Flight of Angels" railroad—just two blocks long, up and down a steep hill. Wandering in long, slow motion, the film shows the progress of urban renewal unfolding as the old slope railway continues to roll up and down, up and down, up and down.
After the film was finished, the ramp was removed. Many years later, however, a new "angel flight" was built to serve the modern city towers that now dominate the landscape. It is much more expensive to drive on it.
