In this video, we delve into the surprising story of Dan Abramov, one of the core contributors to React and its ecosystem, and how he ended up earning less than a junior developer after a decade of coding. We explore Abramov's journey from a struggling college student in Russia to becoming a highly talented software engineer who worked on various projects, including fixing a flaky email service in New York and developing an iPad app that didn't have product market fit.

We also take a closer look at his experience of relocating to a new job in a new country and the challenges he faced with adjusting to new systems and the language barrier. Despite his talent, Abramov's salary is comparatively low, especially when compared to other tech leaders. However, we also discover that his salary is still a good one in the UK, and he doesn't "need" to make more.

We end the video by revealing how much Abramov makes now and comparing it to a video tech lead, as well as revealing how much a two-bedroom apartment costs in London. And, to add some humor, we reveal that the title of the video is a joke and that Abramov actually paid for a sublime text license. So, are software engineers really that well-paid? Find out by watching this video!
