“On February 8, after a regularly scheduled chapel service on Asbury University’s campus, in Wilmore, Kentucky, a group of about 20 students lingered and began to worship and pray for one another.
The chapel speaker that day, Zak Meerkreebs, had exhorted the students to “become the love of God by experiencing the love of God,” and closed with a prayer asking God to “revive us by your love.” According to the students, as they stayed and prayed, an unexplainable, surreal peace descended upon the room.
As minutes stretched into hours, many students who had gone to class returned to the auditorium when they heard what was going on.
They would eventually be joined by faculty, staff, and community members who trickled in to participate in worship and prayer.”

The subject today is Revival and the Great American Awakenings. I had hoped for the students of Asbury College for a real revival of the presence of God.
•
That is, until I found that this is the 9th such revival in Asbury’s illustrious history and many of these revival events start in February. I truly pray for the best.

My father graduated in 1936 from Asbury College. I heard him say he had met CH Morrison, a powerful revivalist and a stalwart of the old Wesleyan Methodist tradition.

My father chose to teach remedial subjects of the first, second and third grades to convicted juvenile offenders, ages 16 to 25, in a state reformatory.

On the heels of the First Great Awakening was the independence of the American Colonists wanting freedom; to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The Second Great Awakening(1790–1840) was a time of evangelical fervor and revival in the newly formed nation of America.

The British colonies were settled by many individuals who were looking for a place to worship their Christian religion free from persecution.

As such, America arose as a religious nation as observed by Alexis de Tocqueville and others. Part and parcel with these strong beliefs came a fear of secularism and materialism.

Other revivalists in the 19th Century, but not originally from the Americas. Although The Salvation Army, started in 1865 in England, as a denomination they came to the States in 1880s.
It’s first representative in America was a 14 year old girl.

You’ve heard the expression “I fell off of wagon.”
The expression comes from when in The Salvation Army was in the bowery with a horse and a flatbed wagon.
The Salvationist would go along the street to help the hopeless helpless and groggy alcoholic to get on the wagon to go down to The Harbor Light. Where daily The Salvation Army offered a meal and the gospel.

As the flatbed bumped along the cobblestone streets, some of the fellows and women, who were severely inebriated, were caused to be jostled about sufficiently to “fall off of the wagon”.

After I heard of all of the horrible things that would happen during the revealed Revelations. I didn’t want to be here.
But now that we’re here, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in time or in space.

A heightened sense of God
An afterglow that God is in this place

I’m talking about Primitive Christianity. When God regularly meets with his people.

I have a friend who is still with the old church. He is an honest and godly man. He still maintains a post in his local church after 60 years of being a pious minister of the Gospel.

I asked him awhile back if he and his denominational church was ready for the revival, the Great Awakening that currently has a ground swell of attention.

A revival of people not getting their feelings hurt.
A revival of people not grinding grating grousing and complaining.
A revival of thankfulness.

So you can get over your guilt.
