Why was Jesus angry at the moneychangers?

At the beginning of his ministry on Earth, Jesus went into the temple and chased all the merchants out of the building. He was filled with the zeal of God's house, according to John 2:17.

However, what were the money changers doing that was so bad? All they were doing was exchanging livestock and cash. Was that a sin?
