Today we are back and I am using home grown onions for our easy joesgarden zero waste onion tip. Onion skins are often just thrown away which is a real shame.

The skins are an excellent source of vitamins A, C, E as well as numerous antioxidants. As well as these health benefits, when made into powder they can easily add a beautiful onion seasoning to any dish or even be used as a broth.

It is worth noting I’m using fresh organic home grown onions which I know have no chemicals or pesticides on them. I always recommended on this channel to grow your own produce but if you can’t make sure to check your produce before using the skins for this recipe. I will always discard any mouldy or discoloured skins (composting is also a great way to reuse onion skins)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Thoroughly was your onion peels discarding any mouldy or bad peels, then leave to soak for about 10 minutes in hot water.

2) Dry your skins using a towel and then either dehydrate your skins or gently bake until they are crispy to the touch. To save energy you can bake with your home cooking.

3) For the best results crush using a pestle and mortar with a pinch of salt added but the easiest way is to use a blender.

4) I like to store in a salt shaker, ready to season potatoes or any other cooking.
