Matt Duss joins Sam Seder to discuss President Biden's foreign policy. The Biden administration has turned a blind eye to Saudi Arabian human rights violations and gives the excuse that the Russian invasion of Ukraine must take precedence. But what about their strategy when it comes to dealing with China?

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Let's talk about that and your perspective on the Biden administration's approach to that and then we'll get to China which I think is far more problematic in many respects. yeah I mean I think that the Segway makes sense right? because even I mean the justification you'll hear from a lot of the folks in the administration. It was like well Ukraine changed everything. You know we know we can't be fighting with the Saudis at the same time we're trying to help the Ukrainians fight the Russians. but the fact is I mean they this you know this kind of rapprochement between the U.S. and Mohammed bin Salman was well underway before you know the Ukraine war happened. I mean it's just that I think I don't totally discount it. I think it is true. It has made things much more complicated. but I think it also in some ways provided a very convenient excuse to do and accelerate what they were going to do anyway. because you know it's not just oil this is a very this is a deeply rooted relationship for good or ill. I would say mostly ill. not just on the issue of energy but on you know Intelligence on defense. Obviously, Saudi Arabia spends a lot of money on American weapons. and put lots of money in the bank accounts of Defense contractors and they would like very much for that money to continue to go to their bank accounts. So you know shifting this relationship is an enormous challenge in the best-case scenario. which we are not in right now because as you said Ukraine. So yeah, I think we in general, you know, think all things considered, Biden has handled Ukraine fairly well. you know I think their goal they've articulated like three main goals here. one is not to be drawn into a war with Russia, the United States, or NATO. It's to help Ukraine defend its own territorial integrity. and to produce a strategic defeat for Russia. Now I think that you know all of those things I think thus far are what they're succeeding at. you know I think in my view it's interesting you know a lot of my colleagues and Friends of what might be called the restraint Camp including you mentioned Quincy Institute you know folks who I know and have worked with for a long time you know I think some of these folks on both the left and right have been a bit more critical of Biden on Ukraine raising some questions. which I think are legitimate questions of what are our interests in Ukraine. but my own view is you know Biden is practicing restraint in Ukraine. he's being very cautious not to be drawn in, not to allow the US to be drawn in, certainly with U.S troops. Which he took off the table very early on. But at the same time, he does recognize I think rightly that there is a pretty foundational International Norm at stake here about you know States should not you know be allowed to invade and steal large chunks of land from their smaller weaker Neighbors.
