Blasphemy! Leviticus 24

In Leviticus 24:10 - 16, an Israelite man blasphemes God and God orders that the man be stoned to death.

What exactly is blasphemy? Is it really deserving of death? Is Old Testament blasphemy anything like blaspheming the Holy Spirit in the New Testament?
