HOW TO FORGIVE OURSELVES – The Hardest Person to Forgive – Little Big Things
We all have struggles with forgiveness. But even when we’ve learned to forgive others, or to forgive God, it seems that the hardest person to ever forgive can be ourselves.

🎥 📖 Video Text:
We all have struggles with forgiveness. But even when we’ve learned to forgive others, or to forgive God, it seems that the hardest person to ever forgive can be ourselves. Like a mantra, we say or think “I’ve asked for Jesus to forgive me… But why can’t I forgive myself?”
Forgiving ourselves can sometimes be the hardest thing to do simply because we know the full extent of what we did or didn’t do…. We chose to get mad. We decided to be entitled. We made a poor decision. We put work ahead of our family. We had problems in our marriage and instead of stepping into it, we stepped out of it. Over and over again, repeatedly, we continue to make the same mistakes.
Bottom line: We all have regrets. Things we have said or done that can never be unsaid or undone. Or to flip it around, we can ask ourselves all day long, why didn’t I…. as we replay our decisions to not act in a better way.
Some people label this unforgiveness of self as guilt and others call it shame. Satan doesn’t care what you call it, as long as it pulls you down, down, down and away from God and others.
“If I only had…. If I have only hadn’t…” Satan wants to use your shame to drive you away from God….
He says, “After what you’ve done, God will never love you.”
He chides, “What a hypocrite you are.”
He scolds, “If people knew who you really were, no one would want to be around you.”
He reminds, “If other people won’t forgive you, how can you forgive yourself.”
The bottom line is that Satan lies to us with half-baked truths. Let’s look at the apostle Peter’s situation – just so we can see our own situation a little better. There is no doubt that Peter had a great big heart for and sincerely loved Jesus.
Peter was the man who walked on water (Matthew 14: 28-33). He was the first disciple to name Jesus as the Messiah (Matthew 16:16) and he was chosen by Jesus to witness the transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9). Peter left his occupation to follow Jesus and was fiercely loyal to him. Imagine hearing Peter say – even insist to Jesus, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” Then imagine watching as Peter had the courage to pull out his sword when they came to arrest Jesus and cut off someone’s right ear (John 18:10-11). What a warrior. What a champion for Jesus!!
But what did Peter do next? All four gospels (Matthew 26:69–74, Mark 14:66–72, Luke 22:55–62, and John 18:15–18, 25–27) report that Peter denied Jesus three times as he watched Jesus get falsely accused, beaten, and insulted. All because Peter was afraid.
Imagine the regret. The shame and the guilt. Probably as bad or worse than any remorse you and I have ever felt. Heavy, unthinkable, and unforgiveable....
