DM 47.1 – What’s with Sparky?
There’s a new version out, so as we take a look at what got updated, let’s look back at its roots. So, what is SparkyLinux? It is a lightweight Debian distro which started as a hobby project back in 2011. Originally it was an Ubuntu Remix, based on the Enlightenment desktop, but within a year or so, it was switched to Debian, and now comes in 4 main, light-ish desktops, and a bunch of window managers as “spins” or favors of it.
· Xfce
· LXQt
· KDE Plasma
· MATE (semi-rolling version only)
There are also versions of SparkyLinux for slightly more demanding and advanced users:
· MinimaGUI – equipped with the ultra-light Openbox window manager.
What’s new, though?
Changes:
· system upgraded from Debian & Sparky stable repos as of February 4, 2023
· PC: Linux kernel 5.10.166 (6.1.10, 5.15.92-ESR and 4.9.337-ESR49 (EOL) can be installed from Sparky unstable repos)
· ARM: Linux kernel 5.15.84-v7+
· Firefox 102.7.0.0esr (109.0.1 Mozilla build can be installed from Sparky repos as the ‘firefox-sparky’)
· Thunderbird 102.6.0
· LibreOffice 7.0.4
· LXQt 0.16.0
· Xfce 4.16
· Openbox 3.6.1
· KDE Plasma 5.20.5
· small improvements
Why should you think about Sparky? It is rock stable... Hello... Debian base. It’s lightweight, possibly lighter than most. Sure, these packages are very old, but they are in the realm of “tried and true” now. You’re unlikely to get any up-to-date packages in a distro like this, as that is not the point. The point is that it is light, fast, and stable.

DM 47.2 – OpenSUSE Leap 15.5 Beta in the Wild
What’s openSuse? What’s Leap? openSUSE is developed by the team behind SUSE Enterprise Linux, and comes in two forms, Leap, and Tumbleweed. Leap is in the vein of Ubuntu, where you are largely stable between version upgrades. Tumbleweed is a rolling distro, much like Arch, other than owing its packages to the repositories to SLE (SUSE Linux Enterprise). Even tumbleweed is a bit more stable due to this arrangement than Arch is. What looks likely to be in this new version?
· KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS
· Mesa 22.3
· Python 3.10
· And more... Stay tuned as we get closer to the official release in early June of this year.
