Performance Notes:

The “Little Piece” began as a solo for clarinet with piano. Its original title was “Morceau à déchiffrer pour le concours de clarinette de 1910,” which translates to something like “Sight-reading test for the 1910 clarinet competition.” This was later changed to “Petite Piéce.”
While there is not specific marking for rubato, the tempo may—and probably should—ebb and flow. This setting includes markings [inside brackets] added by the arranger to indicate what the general flow might be. While the tempo may be malleable, the rhythm is not. Care should be taken to avoid the dotted-16th 32nd rhythms becoming “rounded off.” The 32nd should be right on time, or perhaps placed just a little bit late (but not to the point of becoming a double-dotted rhythm). The music should be subtly playful. The player may be tempted to apply a leggiero kind of “bouncing” aspect to the jaunty rhythms, but perhaps better would be to save any of that sort of affectation for just arrival points—the high points of some of the phrases. To conclude is a special mention of the portato figure in bar 22. The word literally means “carried,” and so the staccato should be separated but the notes should be connected almost as if slurred. In this case, you could compare the sound to a laugh: “Ha-ha-haaa.”
