Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia will suspend its participation in New Start, the last major nuclear arms control treaty with the US.

In a speech marking the one-year anniversary of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Putin accused the US of wanting to "inflict a strategic defeat" on Russia and "claim our nuclear facilities."

The 2010 New Start treaty limits the deployed strategic nuclear arsenals of the world's two largest nuclear powers and provides for joint monitoring of each side's deployed nuclear arsenals. The US Secretary of State called Putin's announcement "deeply unfortunate and irresponsible."
