The UN General Assembly holds its 11th emergency special session, 17th plenary meeting, in New York City on Wednesday, February 22 to discuss a draft resolution on Russia’s 'attempted illegal annexation' of parts of Ukraine.

On September 30, 2022, President Vladimir Putin agreed to sign documents allowing the accession of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye, to the Russian Federation.

According to Moscow, it followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia. Kiev described it as an 'annexation' of its sovereign territory.

The text, drafted by Ukraine will be put to a vote at the end of a session. It underscores the urgency to find ‘a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations’

The session takes place at UN Headquarters ahead of the one year anniversary of the conflict.
