The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has strongly denounced Russia's decision to pull out of its last nuclear arms control treaty with the US as "deeply unfortunate and irresponsible". In a statement, he warned that Washington would be "watching carefully" to assess Moscow's next steps. In support of his decision, President Vladimir Putin announced the move during a speech, and additionally threatened the resumption of nuclear testing. Consequently, this has caused increased tension between the two nations and raised serious concerns about the future of nuclear disarmament. The US has already responded by extending the New START treaty and calling for an extension of the Treaty on Open Skies, so that Russia can be held accountable for its actions. If Russia fails to take part in this treaty, the US has warned that it could take further action, such as imposing economic sanctions.
