I have tried plenty of external solar lights and although not the cheapest out there this new pair from Shuniu are larger and more attractive than most. I selected the brown finish model but a black version is also available.

In the plain low end box can be found the two lamps, with wall templates and fittings kits for each together with a well written and easy to read user guide in English and German.

Each lamp has got a large solar panel on the top with the bulb mounted behind a transparent window below. Above the window are a single Off/On control button and the motion detection and light sensors. Take note that there is no indication which way the switch is set which can lead to confusion should the battery run out. The lamps use removeable
18650 batteries which can be charged externally or replaced if necessary.

At 17 by 19.5 cm each the lamps are larger than most and although constructed almost entirely from ABS plastic they do feel better made and more robust and are certainly more stylishly designed. The lamps are IP54 waterproof, so they will be fine in the rain but make sure not to immerse them in water. The lighting itself comes from COB (Chip on Board) LEDs which are brighter and more efficient than old style LED lighting. The lamps use E14 COB LED bulbs which can be replaced - although some simple soldering will be needed - as the back panel of each lamp unit is removable.

There are motion sensors built into each lamp with a 120-degree detection zone with a range of up to 12 metres.. The warm white lights will come on automatically in dim mode at night and will switch to full power when motion is detected, returning to low power after 20 seconds.

If you need some stylish outdoor security lights and are happy to pay a bit more for the larger size and stylish design, then these might be just what you need. That said, there are plenty of cheaper rivals available.
