Mardi Gras, an annual celebration most popular in New Orleans, has roots in the Catholic faith, being the feast before the fasting time of Lent. However, many religions have a similar spring feast day, and according to Father Luis Rodriguez of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the discipline of Lent doesn't have to be a sacrifice.
