Snow removal started with manual shoveling on walkways. When people started using cars the shoveling expanded to driveways and roads started being plowed. Then snowblowers, and bigger plows, and bigger plows cleared more driveways, parking lots and miles of road. Even spring road opening in mountain passes that are closed for winter are big plow operations today.
