Felling Trees All Is Well Until ~~ Disaster

Chris and I dropped some of the biggest trees I ever felled in my life. And the scariest ones too because these were right by the house. All was going well until disaster struck.

The last trees we have to drop up beside the house are the ones I dread the most. There were eight trees left by the house that I have to remove in order to maximize the solar power output on my off grid tiny house solar panels.

The biggest tree of them all was the first one we dropped. I put a rope up as high as I could in the tree and we connected a come along to the rope. Chris put pressure on the rope and I cut the tree.

It was very hard going because this tree was huge. It was the maximum width that my chain saw could cut through with this bar.

Finally though it dropped. And it dropped precisely where I wanted it. We were very pleased.

The next tree went just as well. I put the rope up high into the tree and then Chris put pressure on the rope with a come along. This pulls the tree in the direction that we want it to fall.

This one landed right on top of the first tree. Perfect.

The next tree was a bit trickier because it was leaning backwards towards the tiny house. This one scared me but I went up a ladder and got the rope as high into the tree as we could.

I cut the V notch and then Chris put pressure on the rope.

I then cut the hinge. This is when things went bad. At the time I could not see what was going on but I only knew that the tree was coming right for my head. I could not believe what I saw. I side stepped out of the way as the tree passed where I had been standing. I slowly turned and watched the tree fall right in front of the tiny house on wheels. It crashed down around the solar panels completely engulfing them. We thought they were gone for sure. You could not see the solar panels under the tree.

Chris and I immediately started cutting away branches of the tree until we got the solar panels cleared out. By some miracle the solar panels are not harmed one bit.

Actually nothing at all was harmed by the tree. Just a few small metal wire fence pieces got bent up. And these we can fix.

But it sure was a mess in front of the off grid tiny house on wheels and we had a lot of work to clean it all up.

We noticed that the wind had picked up as well at this time. The error was most likely that the tree was leaning too far and Chris did not have the strength to pull the come along hard enough to pull the tree in the direction we wanted it to fall. I should have paid more attention to this. I could have put tension on myself.

I think I was also a bit over confident and this was a mistake.

The wind picked up suddenly and this was a bad thing.

The hinge was cut a tiny bit crooked in the end and this could have caused the problem

It could have been any of a number of things but one thing is certain - someone out there was watching over us.

Nothing was harmed at all. Not the solar panels. Not even the herbs in the herb garden under the tree. It could have been much worse.

This was the last of tree felling for the day for us. We spent the rest of the day cleaning up the mess.
