Making Chicken Pen Door & Setting Up Chicken Coops

We finished fencing in the chicken range and then build a door for the pen using all recycled materials that we got for free.

The three of us were wiring up the chicken range where the birds will be able to eventually free range around the entire perimeter of the meadow. As we continue our logging work the chicken range will be extended.

I had planned to wire up the fencing and then build the door frame. Then I was going to cut out the door from the chicken wire. But I forgot one thing when we were finishing up the chicken wire. I left the camera inside the new chicken pen, on and recording. The camera was not stuck inside the chicken pen. Oh well, things can happen.

Due to my wrist being swollen from some bug bite, I was a bit disabled and Melanie wanted to learn how to use the power tools. this was her opportunity. She learned greedily and fully enjoyed helping to build the door frame for the chicken pen.

First of all though we needed to pound in another T post to help hold the frame in place better. Melanie used the post pounder and got the job done herself.

Melanie screwed in the supporting boards which strengthen the door frame. We used a large lawn mower crate frame for the gateway frame. It was already built and strong.

Melanie attached the boards around the new doorway and then she cut out the opening for the gate herself using the reciprocating saw.

Next Melanie tied the ropes which act as hinges for the gate and then another at the top which keeps the door from sagging.

As I was inside stapling the chicken wire to the gate framing, Melanie went over and worked with her new skills on some project. She later explained that she was making coffee coasters from scrap wood.

When we finished the chicken range, Chris and I went on the hunt for chickens. We hunted down and captured as many chickens as we could by hand. A few managed to escape us for the present but we will get them eventually.

Finally Chris and I got a couple chicken coops moved into the new chicken pen so that those birds who want it will have some shelter for the night. Most of the birds stay outside all year round on their own.

I then took some boards and screwed them onto some tree stumps so the birds can use them as roosts during the day or night to rest on.
