Homestead Family Work & Enjoying Garden Harvest
Today Melanie shows us her egg gathering. I run the log splitter a while. And we show you around a bit in our organic homestead garden.
In the morning I show you around the chicken pen a bit. Chris calls the birds inmates and the large pen he calls the prison. The larger pen is the minimum security prison where the turkeys manage to fly right straight out the top each night. Although a poke in the bottom gets them back in each night.
The other three chicken coops by the goats are the maximum security prisons. These are for the worst offenders. The birds that keep escaping from the large pen go permanently into the smaller pens where they cannot get out.
Melanie shows us her egg gathering this morning. She gets between 8 and 13 eggs per day now. She really loves to gather eggs and she loves her birds very much.
I ran the log splitter a while and tried out a new technique that I learned from the comments right here on YouTube. I have been learning from you guys for years now. Thank you.
The new way of running the log splitter is to push one log right behind the other and keep them flowing through. This allows me to push the logs right through all the way and I do not have to split any fibers afterward. I got the technique down but the camera battery died so I did not get to demonstrate.
Later I had the camera working but then ran out of gas. We had no gas on the entire homestead so I will have to show you another time.
Chris and I are looking for water on the off grid homestead. We found a wet area in the ground and tried to dig for water. We had hoped to hit ground seepage and find some water for the animals at least. But no luck. We hit hard clay and stopped digging.
I cut some of the monster squash up and baked it for our dinner. We all enjoyed it with our meal that Melanie cooked. The squash smells like pumpkin but tastes like acorn squash. We baked it with butter, salt and pepper. It sure was good.
We will save the seeds for roasting and keep a few for planting next year. The rest of the squash we will eat or can. It is huge so we will get a lot out of it.
