We have been raising our own meat birds this year. These are cornish cross broiler chickens. They are bred to grow very fast.

These birds go from egg to dinner plate in just 8 weeks. We kept ours for 12 weeks though but that is due to the following.

We put our chickens out every day to get fresh grass and bugs. This gives them exercise, fresh air and reduces feed cost.

Our first 6 chickens were eating about 6 quarts of feed per day when left in the chicken coop. But when outside all day they only ate 1 to 2 quarts of feed per day.

The fresh air and exercise also made the birds stronger. These birds were quite healthy when we processed them.

Broiler meat birds will sit around by the food container and eat all day and night if you pen them up. But when semi free ranging they run and play a lot during the day. They are also foraging for food. This makes them much healthier.

Generally they say you should process meat birds when their legs break. They grow so fast that their bodies cannot keep up with the weight.

But our birds were still very strong when we processed them.

I think this is very much due to the fresh air and semi free ranging.
