I have salvaged an old car jump starter pack for its electronics and battery charger. You can read the full article here: http://www.thedoityourselfworld.com/articles/article.php?id=11415

There are sometimes a lot of good electronics to be salvaged from a dead car jump starter pack. I am using this one to charge dead lead acid batteries.

There is a battery charger and maintainer. There is usually some sort of volt meter or battery status indicator to tell you how much charge your battery has.

There is always a high amp switch which is worth $10 to $14 alone. These can be used in off grid solar power experiments or for car and vehicle applications.

There is also usually a 12 volt cigarette lighter socket which is fused. These have many uses around a homestead or in a vehicle.

There are many other options packed into these little devices. Some have radios, air compressors, power inverters and more.

I get them for free from a friend who scraps out metal and takes the rest to the dump. I am not only getting free electronics for myself but I am saving stuff from the landfill.
