The status of our off grid homestead after being away during a cold week in January. Some things are fine. Some things are very bad. I cooked Melanie a meal on the tiny house wood stove.

We were gone for a few days during the coldest part of the year. When we got back to the off grid homestead everything looked well at first.

The goats and chickens are all fine. A friend was taking care of them for us while we were away. Our cats are fine as well. He was checking on them every second day.

But the greenhouse is a total loss. Our friend did not run the wood stove a few hours a day as needed to prevent the lines from freezing. The barrels of heated water are supposed to help keep the chill off at night and the propane heater helps keep it warm on extreme cold nights.

But everything was frozen solid. Even the fish tank was frozen. We have been setting up an aquaponics lab in our off grid greenhouse and had the fish in there already. This establishes a system and gets the chemicals in balance before we add the plants. We were almost ready for the plants at this time.

Now though the greenhouse is a loss. Literally everything was frozen solid. The plants are all dead. Most of the fish are dead and under an inch of ice. There is some fish food tossed in on top of the ice, which did nothing for the fish.

Our wood stove boiler system was frozen solid as well. Sort of ironic that the heating system for the greenhouse was itself frozen.

Back inside the off grid tiny house on wheels I cooked a nice meal for Melanie on the wood stove. I picked up a whole chicken in the morning and put it in the dutch oven with some vegetables and herbs. Some of the vegetables and all the herbs we grew ourselves.

The meal turned out to be quite amazing. The chicken meat just fell off the bone it was so well cooked after six hours slow cooking in the dutch oven.

Someone sent us a book on recycled pallet wood projects. This is perfect for us since we have been looking for pallet wood project ideas. Thank you.
